Mamas often want to know: If I have to be readmitted for postpartum preeclampsia (or anything else), can my baby stay with me, and can I breastfeed?
Here are some points to consider and to discuss with your doctor, possibly ahead of time just in case:
It is generally safe to breastfeed or pump while on mag, and certain BP medications are also safe for lactation. You may need assistance with holding your baby or the pump while on mag. If you will be separated from baby, will the hospital provide the pump and supplies, or will you need to do so?
Many hospitals do allow babies to stay all day and night or just during certain hours, but not all hospitals can accommodate that.
You may be required to have another adult with you at all times that baby is there, or just while you are on mag, and you may be required to sign a statement to the effect that that adult, not the hospital, is responsible for the baby. If your partner does not have enough work leave to accommodate a stay, or if your partner needs to stay home with older children, do you have relatives and friends who can help, even for short shifts?
You may need to supply diapers, clothing, and a stroller or baby carrier (so your companion can go get food with baby in tow).
If you have been discharged and subsequently readmitted postpartum, what has your experience been with these concerns? Please share how you and your hospital managed things.
